Cappadocia (Turkish: Kapadokya) is a region in Central Anatolia in Turkey. It’s well-known for its unique moon-like landscape, underground cities, cave churches and houses carved in the rocks. Cappadocia is one of the biggest wine-producing regions in Turkey. Especially cool attraction is winetasting offered by many wineries throughout the region’s towns.

When to visit Cappadocia?

Basically, you can visit Cappadocia any time of the year as it is an amazing place even when it’s under snow during the winter. However due to summer crowds, maybe it’s better to plan your visit for spring or autumn.

History of Cappadocia

Incredible landscape of Cappadocia was created by the volcanic eruptions about one million years ago. From historical aspect, the most interesting thing in this region are underground cities. Initially made in Bronze age, they were mostly used during the Byzantine period. The entire area was actually populated by Byzantine Christians who built the churches, dungeons, storage rooms, winemaking rooms and even some underground castles. Majority of the monuments here are dating back to the 11th century. It is estimated that 20,000 people could have lived here at one point in time. Nowadays, The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a World Heritage site that has amazing collection of chapels and living quarters.

Cappadocia climate

Cappadocia is a continental climate region. Main characteristics are hot dry summers and cold snowy winters. There is a sharp difference in the temperature between day and night and it is not uncommon to have freezing cold nights interspersed with scorching hot days. The average temperature during the summer months is 23°C while winter's average is substantially lower at -2°C. Cappadocia has much cooler and drier weather than its Mediterranean and Aegean counterparts, which are generally more popular tourist destinations.

Public transportation

Since Cappadocia has a limited public transportation (due to the very low population density) and that many sites you may want to visit there are quite spread around, it would probably be for the best to either rent a car or visit the region as a part of a guided tour.
